Family Soup, psyche, stories in images

My aunt's name was Lucille. She was a painter and in her earlier years would have her shoes made for her. These are her shoe forms.
The picture to the right of the shoes her last painting, she was working on it during her illness. I call it' A Way Out'. She died in my arms.

My grandfather took this photo of Greta Garbo. His name was James Manatt, daddy Jimmy. He was a still
photographer in the 20's 30's and 40's. He loved to take a trip to the mountains every summer.
He would drive his old beat up camper up to the Sierra's and dissapear for a while. He grew persimmons and apricots
at his house in Southern California.

My father, Sterling Cottrell became Dept. Assistant Secretary of State under Dean Rusk in the Kennedy adminsitration in the 60's. This was his good luck Buddha.
He was a Navy pilot early in his carreer and told me he always took this Buddha with him and rubbed it's head if things got rough. Soon I will post a couple of the stories he wrote
about those times. He's got some wonderful tales. In fact, he wrote a book which has never been published. He gave bound copies to his wife and three girls.

Lydia Taylor, was my great grandmother.
This was her childhood iron .It's about 2 1/2 inches in length.
She told me how much she loved being able to iron with her mother
who allowed her to iron the family handkerchiefs. The iron was heated
on a woodstove. She also told tales of how, as a child when living
in Texas, she was saved by an Indian. A pony she was riding took off
with her on it. On of the local tribesman rode up along side as they galloped across the plains and
took her on his own horse which he was riding bareback.
